Non surgical weight loss solution

The Gastric Balloon is a tool to help you take control of your weight and give you the kick-start to a healthier lifestyle.

Studies show that patients who have undergone the Gastric Balloon procedure are more likely to maintain their weight loss over a longer period of time than compared to diets alone.

What is a Gastric Balloon?

The Gastric Balloon is a soft, expandable balloon inserted into the stomach through a simple, sedated procedure. Once in place, it partially fills the stomach, helping you feel fuller faster and longer after meals. This promotes smaller portion sizes and helps control your calorie intake.

Who is it for?

The Gastric Balloon is most beneficial for those looking to lose 15-30kg and is particularly effective for individuals who have not achieved desired results with diet and exercise alone. This procedure is suitable for patients with a BMI between 27 to 40 and for those who are looking for an alternative to surgical weight loss methods. It’s especially suited for those who are apprehensive about surgery or frustrated with other unsuccessful weight loss methods.

Benefits of the Gastric Balloon

Early and Prolonged Fullness: The presence of the balloon creates a constant feeling of fullness, reducing your appetite and helping you to eat smaller meals.

Non-Surgical: Inserted during a brief outpatient procedure, the Gastric Balloon involves no surgical incisions, making it a less invasive option than other weight loss surgeries.

Temporary: The balloon is designed to be a temporary aid in your weight loss journey. It can be easily removed after 6 or 12 months as you learn new eating habits.

Kick-Start Weight Loss: Ideal for those who need a jump-start in weight loss, especially if traditional diets, pills, or programs haven’t led to success.

How It Works

How is the gastric balloon placed?

The placement of a gastric balloon, also known as an intragastric balloon (IGB), is typically performed as an outpatient procedure by a gastroenterologist or a surgeon specialising in endoscopic procedures. Here’s a general overview of how the gastric balloon is placed:

  • Preparation: You might need to go on a liquid diet starting three days before your procedure. You will then be asked to fast for a certain period to ensure that your stomach is empty usually about 6 hours. This reduces the risk of complications such as aspiration during the procedure. Dr Yanez Peerbaccus will provide specific instructions on fasting and any medications you may need to take prior to the procedure.
  • Anesthesia: The placement of the gastric balloon is usually performed under anaesthesia to minimise discomfort and ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.
  • Endoscopy: The placement of the gastric balloon is typically done using an endoscope, a long, flexible tube with a camera and light at the end. You will be positioned on your back or side on an examination table. A mouth guard may be inserted to protect your teeth and the endoscope.
  • Insertion of the balloon: Once you are sedated or under anesthesia, the endoscope is gently inserted through your mouth and into your esophagus, then advanced into your stomach. The deflated gastric balloon is passed through the mouth into your stomach.
  • Inflation of the balloon: Once the balloon is in the desired position in your stomach, it is filled with a sterile saline solution and a blue dye under direct vision from the endoscope. The amount of saline used depends on the specific type of balloon and the size of your stomach. Once inflated, the balloon expands to occupy space in your stomach, creating a feeling of fullness and reducing the amount of food you can comfortably eat.
  • Once the balloon is in place and confirmed, the endoscope is carefully withdrawn from your mouth. The entire procedure usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
  • After the procedure: you will be monitored in a recovery area until the effects of the sedation or anesthesia wear off. You may experience some discomfort or nausea initially, but this typically resolves within a few days.
  • Duration: The balloon can remain in place for 6 or 12 months, depending on your specific goals and recommendations from our expert team.

It’s important to note that while gastric balloon placement is generally considered safe, it carries some risks and potential complications, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and balloon migration. Dr. Yanez Peerbaccus will discuss these risks with you before the procedure and provide guidance on how to minimise them.

Recovery following the Gastric Balloon procedure is typically quick, allowing you to return to your daily activities soon after. While some patients may experience mild discomfort or nausea initially, these symptoms generally subside quickly with some medication usage for the first few days only while being at home.

Guided Nutritional Support:

Our dedicated dietitians play a crucial role in your recovery and long-term success. They will carefully guide you through each dietary phase:

  • Initial Phase: Starting with a liquid-only diet to ensure gentle reintroduction to eating.
  • Second Phase: Progressing to soft foods as your tolerance improves.
  • Final Phase: Gradually returning to regular meals, now with a better understanding of portion control and nutritional balance.

Removal of the Balloon:

After about six months, or up to twelve months depending on your specific program, the balloon is safely deflated and carefully removed. This procedure is straightforward and marks a significant milestone in your weight loss journey.

Continued Support After Balloon Removal:

To ensure your well-being and to monitor your progress, regular check-ups with Dr. Yanez Peerbaccus and our supportive team are essential. These check-ins are a great opportunity to address any concerns you may have and to adjust your dietary plan as needed.

FAQS

I am not located in Brisbane. Are your programs and procedures suitable for me?

Absolutely, we work with patients from all around Australia and currently have many patients located outside of Brisbane.

Your initial consultation can usually occur via video conference (Zoom).

When it comes to the procedure itself, you will be required to remain in Brisbane for at least the first two to three days post-procedure, as it is during this time that you are most at risk of an uncommon complication.

To further support patients who are unable to attend their allied health consultations face-to-face, we offer video consultations to ensure you are able to access the full support of your care team and get the most out of your health consultations.

You should plan at least three to five days of inactivity to recover from the procedure. You will be able to resume normal activity sooner or later than this depending on how quickly your body adjusts to the balloon.

Alcohol in moderation is fine, however keep in mind that excessive or regular alcohol intake will compromise your weight loss efforts given it is high in calories.

Avoid snacking on foods high in fat or sugar such as crisps, biscuits, sweets, chocolate or savoury snacks. Two weeks after your gastric balloon has been inserted, most people find that they can manage ‘normal texture’ foods, but this will vary from person to person.

It’s common for individuals to experience some discomfort or side effects after the placement of a gastric balloon. Nausea, abdominal cramping, and occasional vomiting are indeed among the possible immediate side effects.

To help manage these symptoms, Dr. Yanez Peerbaccus often prescribe potent anti-nausea medications to be taken in advance of the procedure. These medications can help alleviate discomfort and make the adjustment to the gastric balloon more tolerable for the individual.

Additionally, we typically provide guidance on managing symptoms post-procedure, which may include dietary recommendations, hydration strategies, and other supportive measures to ease any discomfort and ensure a smoother transition. It’s essential for individuals undergoing such procedures to closely follow the instructions provided by their healthcare team and to communicate any concerns or difficulties they may experience during the recovery process.
